The food here isn't what you think of when people tell you to go to the Mission for the best Mexican food in SF. The food at Paplote is a lighter, fresher, non-greasy alternative to what other Mission taquerias have to offer. Try the fish quesadillas, and ask for corn tortillas -- you'll get three small corn quesadillas instead of one big one.
El Farolito is definitely the best. I brought my late mom a burrito from EF, and after that she would cross town on the bus just to have their food. Their green tomatillo salsa is the best I have tasted of all the taquerias in town. They used to have the cheapest prices along with that delicious food, but their prices have risen with the times. Fast, fresh, and freakin' good!
Where to begin... Well, the fact that there is a line out the door the MAJORITY of the time that I eat here (which is slowly becoming M-F) is a good place to start. The next is that El Farolito on 24th and Mission St. knows their product and delivers it with incredible speed to their customers. To be blunt, if I learned that I was going to choke and die on a Chorizo Super Burrito from El Farolito, I would be glad knowing that would be the last taste I would ever know.

If that doesn't sell you, then 50 cent tortilla chips won't either and they do that too...

VIVA EL FAROLITO!
Even though it's in North Beach, it's just as authentic, greasy - but not overly so - and delicious as any spot in the Mission. The grilled chicken taco salad is spicy and served with extra avocado.

Love this place - great Salsa!

By far the best mexican food! Perfect amount of grease, authentic, CHEAP and open late night! One order of Suiza please....
I came out of the womb eating an El Farolito burrito from the Excelsior and now my staple diet consists of super greasy super suizas /w carne asada and jalapeños from the Mission location.

I eat here all the time when I've had too much to drink and it's spectacular. The coolest part is - it's still spectacular when I'm sober.

Open late, cheap and the guys that work there are really nice. Plus their food is the most authentic Mexican food that I've had in Northern California.

They have classic Mexican dishes with flair. Where else in the city can you have cactus that tastes as awesome as it sounds?! Their margaritas are potent, and they have the best selection of flavors AND serve them by the pitcher. Perfect for groups and a dinner for two.

A little out of the way, but worth it. Their mole is rich, and their margaritas are strong. The ambience is dark, and the food's far from light.

they make you happy there

I like this place a lot. This place also has a nice bar and the food is pretty good. I had ceviche and flautas. Both were delicious.

Although honestly, this question is too broad! How about "best non-oaxacan mexican in SF"?

La Oaxaqueña is one of my favorites because they make incredible mole and banana leaf tamales. I stick to the classics (tilapia, chicken mole, shrimp), but the more adventurous foodies can order up ostrich, tarantula, and even grasshopper. Let me know how that goes for you.

Ostrich, tarantula and grasshopper? Wow! It sounds like "Fear Factor" in La Oaxaqueña.

La Palma Mexicatessen for anything carnitas. Tamales are also freaky-good.

Mamacitas for enchiladas and Tacolicious for tacos.

Green Chile Kitchen has the best mexican food. their stews and burritos are amazing and everything is always really fresh. the only thing is that it is a bit $$$ for mexican food. worth it though

A true classic! Hats off to Pancho.

As the self-appointed NOPA expert, I can tell you that Papalote II Mexican Grill has the best grilled tofu and roasted tomato salsa, Nopalitos has the best taquitos and the totopos con chile are ridic. Green Chile Kitchen is delicious, technically "New Mexican" and my boyfriend swears by the roasted pork burrito.

Don Ramon's Mexican Restaurant - it's a photo finish for me between Don Ramon's and Puerto Alegre, but there's just something about the great margaritas, fresh food, and over-the-top friendly staff that makes this my go-to Mexican food spot in SF.

Any differences between the two, Bill?
