Lalibela. Best Ethiopian I've ever had and gosh darn cheap too. It isn't a whole lot to look at, but sit on the patio if you can - good 14th & P St, NW people watching. The tomato salad, simple and really frigging good. I'm told that it's even better than Zed's. Oh, and honey wine - really awesome after a crappy day at work. Or really any day and time it's good... I'm a fan of the kitfo (raw beef) - think carpaccio with kick and a bit mushy that you grab with special bread... And anything with lentils or potatoes involved is homey and good here. You can adjust the hotness of everything too, so you won't hurt yourself. Happens to be the perfect place to catch the DC Pride Parade - food, drink and half naked gay boys.
