Best place to see great smaller artists locally

they never kill you on the cover charge and beer is cheap!

Incredible sound. Great bartenders and staff. Booked by a local promotion company (APE) with by far the best range of shows in the city.

As a girl who normally dances to house music in warehouses, I like my live music shows to provide a contrasting experience. The Independent is an intimate space where I can always see the stage (even at 5'2), the acoustics are good, and the lines at the bar and bathroom are never outrageous. And they book some great acts!

One of my favorite places to see a show. One of the more underrated venues.

There are so many great see live music. I definitely like the smaller places better. Bottom of the Hill, The Independent and Slim's are my favorites. I have also seen some great shows at BarrelHouse, Bimbo's 365 Club and Manor West as well.

I've never been to BarrelHouse, but I've heard a lot of good things - how often do they book shows there? Seems like it's a more sporadic venue.

Bottom of the Hill - as much as I love The Independent and The Fillmore, Bottom of the Hill has one of the nicest, most intimate rooms in SF. I've seen tons of bands on the upswing here - most all of them played a MUCH bigger room the next time they came through SF.

I really like the layout of The Independent.. they're always passing good stuff through, too.

Excellent call, Lou - The Indy was definitely right on the cusp of making the list. It's one of my favorite venues in SF, large or small, and I love that they do the Cinema Drafthouse Mondays when there aren't shows on a Monday night. I think they even showed the niners playoff games in there as well.

The Independent To me, the Independent is everything I look for and expect out of a music venue. Great and diverse mix of established and up-and-coming bands, affordable tickets, a box open with set hours, reasonable drink prices, great sound and an intimate but not too tiny of a viewing area. It gets my vote on this one hands down.

Too many to name. Rickshaw Stop, Mezzanine, The Independent, The Fillmore, @The Boom Boom Room @The Fox. There can never be too many music venues or too much music!
12
didn't know there's a boom boom room here in SF...have you been to the one in NY?
49
You should check it out! I haven't been to the one in NY. Will have to catch a show next time I'm there!

The Fillmore! Also The Warfield Theatre and The Independent. Seen some good shows at The Regency Ballroom this year too, but that place is a little weird...

The Foo Fighters were amazing at Oracle Arena last night, but generally I like smaller venues like The Fillmore and The Warfield Theatre. Though, the Great American Music Hall was really intimate. Should be checking out The Independent for Thrice next month.

Whenever I see two in a row I've got to ask, what makes The Independent so cool?

Those are all cool places for sure. What was the last show you went to?

I just saw James Blake at the Fillmore last Wednesday. It was such an amazing show. The acoustics at that venue are amazing and the bass had everything shaking.

What was the last show you went to?
5
The last show I went to was Dave Dondero at Hemlock. Before that it was Strummerville at Bottom of the Hill and before that The Knitters at GAMH. What kind of music does James Blake play?

So many great places for live music. But my favorites for small venues are Slim's, Red Devil Lounge, Rockit Room and The Independent
8
I live right near Rockit Room. Every time I pass by I'm surprised by its mere existence. I mean, it seems to be a misfit on the block, surrounded by sundries markets and cafes on Clement. I've heard great things. What sort of music will I most likely find live there? And, does it cost more or less than $10 on average?
10
I know on Thursdays there is live reggae.
8
What? Live reggae? I'm so excited right now. How many days 'til thursday?
Sept 22 2011 my friends from Endoxi will be playing upstairs for the second time. $5 cover - you should check them out
At Rockit room :)

They reggae?

The Independent. So many great acts come around there, I would be on top of that like nobody's business.

Have a favorite act so far?

The Independent is such a great venue!

The Independent...Bottom of the Hill...Rickshaw Stop... all great places. the Swedish American Hall has a really unique (kinda creepy) vibe too

I haven't been to Hotel Utah Saloon.... how would you describe the venue?
9
It's a fairly cozy venue with a old world feel. (It was built in 1908 when the Barbary Coast was going down.) The mahogany bar is beautiful and classy. They have 12 tap beers, a few select wines, and a full bar. There's plenty of food. Live music is going on seven nights of the week with an emphasis on local acts.
1
How can I pick ONE when there are so many good spots? The Fillmore, The Independent, The Warfield Theatre, and Great American Music Hall are all gems. For DJ gigs, Mezzanine is great.
7
never been to mezzanine. what are the best nights to go?
1
The Independent is a great place to hear live music. It's small enough that you can feel the music (literally) and see the artists, but large enough that you can get your dance on without worry of being seen in the crowd of people by other people.
9
I really like the acoustics at The Independent. The parking in that area is bad for out-of-towners, though.
25
Yeah you can't park and see a show, but it forces you to walk to the nearby bars - not a bad thing :)
9
Truth.
The Independent Is a great venue! I saw Everclear there and felt like I was almost on stage with them
9
The Independent's a great venue. They have great acoustics there, especially for finicky hip-hop artists.
1
The Independent routinely has great acts, and there's not a bad seat in the house (since it's all GA Floor, there are actually no seats in the house)

Love The Independent! who've you seen perform there?
6
I saw MIA perform here a few years ago. Awesome performance! Also, tickets are usually very reasonable priced at The Independent!
59
You should have been at the show where Tricky performed and dragged half the audience up on stage with him. And then made his way from stage directly to bar afterwards, hugging random people along the way.
6
Sounds like a great time! Sorry I missed it!

The Independent? I haven't been to every venue but that's a good one!

What's the best show you've seen at The Independent?

TV on the Radio was up there. Hot Tub and Das Racist were awesome too. Dave Chapelle was both the best and the worst (the first 60 minutes were amazing, the last 180 just bad).
