Unique bar. Usually has a good mix of people and makes for a fun, interesting night out.
1
Backyard and picnic tables to sit on in fine weather, good if you like to smoke things, knock-out mixed drinks, large selection of beer on tap. This place also has really good food, if you're hungry there is a grill, I recommend the grilled cheese. If you're lucky enough and high enough the Tamale Lady will appear.
1
awesome bloody mary, killer burger

Where does the time go?

Kierkegaard said life can only be understood backwards; but it must be lived forwards. His wisdom can be applied to the quest for the ultimate bloody mary.
1
Biker bar located in the Mission with great outdoor seating.

By biker, do you mean fixie biker?

No pre-mix here! Lot's of Worcestershire, olives, pickled green beans...
1
Old, reliable dive bar on Valencia. Always likely to meet friends and enjoy some great fried potatoes with my beer.

Zeitgeist comes as close as a bar can to showcasing what's great about the Mission and what's great about young San Francisco. Just don't let your friends act like jackasses, because the staff are pretty no-nonsense.
1
No mix here. They make EVERY blood mary to order, and every one of them is delish.
1
There's nothing better on a sunny day than the picnic tables at zeitgeist. I love that they're community, and always leave having made a new friend

1
At least that's what I'm told, by people who like Bloody Marys. It's the best bar in the city either way.

2
I don't even like Bloody Marys, but I love 'em at Zeitgeist. Their patio is perfect for summer sippin'.

That would be at my house. I make the most insanely delicious Sriracha bloody marys - Hangar One vodka, yeah, of course. Bereft of an invite over, Zeitgeist will do you right.
9
I didn't know we could self-nominate! I have a few secrets of the trade myself that I've picked up from various bartenders and Bloody Mary enthusiasts over the years. Maybe Pinchit would host a Bloody Mary-off competition?
mine involves marinating the tomato juice for several days...i see a throwdown coming up ;)

Zeitgeist - It's the most voted because it's the truth. Huge patio = lively crowds = excellent day drinking

1
Zeitgeist - While I tend to favor the Bloodys at Hotel Utah Saloon, they sometimes go with a pre-mix on times other than Sundays. Zeitgeist has some of the most consistently good Bloody Marys you can ask for.

1
I've heard that the Bloody Marys at Zeitgeist are top notch. Has anyone tried one?
10
I haven't tried them but supposedly Luna Park has great bloody's

Zeitgeist - it's the most authentic San Francisco experience you can get in SF.

Zeitgeist in the Mission is one of my favorite places in the city to drink during the day because of its enormous outdoor patio and picnic benches. The trees offer a perfect amount of sun and breeze so that you can forget about all your troubles and focus your mission at hand: enjoy a nice cold beverage on your sunny day off. The patio is large, too, so you can invite all your friends and be able to sit comfortably without having to move for other people ever other minute. Besides the environment, the drinks are cheap and strong -- who can argue with that!?
41
It's all about the home fries! Complements almost any beer quite perfectly.
41
1
Public Works is a fun dance space, but the beers are a little pricey. You might want to down a pint or two at Zeitgeist before heading over.

Zeitgeist has an expansive backyard for drinks and chatter, not to mention some fine burgers at the ready for $5.

The happy hour at Zeitgeist makes me happy. The outdoor patio is refreshing as are the drinks, and the crowd, to me, always seems extra friendly. Warning: Be advised, any person/s observed in possession of a foreign beverage container will be thoroughly ejected without delay.
14
Also, if your'e with camera taking pictures. Or sitting on the tables. Or taking too long to order. I love Zeitgeist.
1
Well, on a nice warm day nothing beats Zeitgeist!

I've been hearing a lot about their bloody marys. Ever had one?
Their bloody marys are incredible. They make them pretty spicy, so I usually suggest ordering a beer along with it. Tastes great with a pint of Stella!
1
6
I do like that place. Have you ever been to El Rio?
1
8
Zeitgeist is definitely in the top tier. The crowds get to me a little, to be honest.
1
6
Yes. Especially when the patio is open!
1
Zeitgeist if they’re looking for a wide beer selection, lively crowd, variety of tunes, and fun outdoor patio. And Ruby Skye if they’re looking for a bar/club scene with house/trance music, would enjoy a plush old theatre setting, lighting effects, and a highly populated crowd across a couple rooms/floors.
10
Both great suggestions. You can even combine Zeitgeist and Ruby Skye into one raucous evening!
Great suggestion combining both venues! That'd be indeed a raucous and well-rounded evening!
1
For a bountiful beer selection, spacious outdoor beer garden with bench seating, a variety of tunes, and a rambunctious crowd – Zeitgeist.
8
I think it's official, Zeitgeist has won.

1
Zeitgeist, sit outside! Really Zeitgeist is pretty much solid for anytime drinking.
10
Everybody on here speaks of Zeitgeist. I think it's time to finally check this place out.
54
you have to try Zeitgeist! the pitchers are so cheap and the outdoor seating is the best, especially for big groups. everyone i take here is always so confused when we first get there, but end up leaving there just as in love with it as i am!
10
I'm gonna have to take my group of friends here once this weather clears up a bit more.

I've never thought about it before, but do you think it's deserving of the name?
54
Absolutely. I really do love everything about Zeitgeist. I've never had a bad experience there. It's hands down one of my favourite places in the city altogether. Do you think it's deserving of the name?
8
Just before I posted I looked up Zeitgeist in the dictionary and found that it meant "the spirit of the age." When I asked, I was wondering if you thought it sums up the current zeitgeist? No argument from me on the awesome front. I've had nothing but good times there.
54
Ohhhh. Yeah when I read, "is it deserving of the name" I thought of it as the reputation it has. As far as the definition of the word, "the spirit of the times," I think it works. Does it represent the moral and cultural climate of today? I think that's up to interpretation of each and every visitor.

Good call on the Rickhouse. Love that place.
54
for sure! and the fact that is right downtown, where i'm guessing a lot of out-of-towners want to be, it's always my go-to recommendation. do you know of any places that have a similar vibe to rickhouse?
10
Have you been to Nihon Whiskey Lounge? Smaller, but with the same cool, effortless vibe. Great spot for entertaining out-of-towners.

Pier 23 Cafe Cafe. Easy to find, strong drinks, tasty menu, friendly staff, indoor and outdoor seating, views of the bay, live music, dancing biker types etc. Mostly though, it's within walking distance from Pier 39 and all the touristy stuff, so they out-of-towners can come here for a reprieve from sightseeing ;) For the quintessential seedy SF experience, I send 'em over to Zeitgeist or Shotwell's. Out-of-towners also seem to get a kick outta Nick's Crispy Tacos on a Tuesday night for dinner and crawling up and down Polk Street (and I can't really blame them!)
7
Wow, I've never been but it sounds amazing. Outdoor seating is always the best especially when you have views of the bay! Any recommendations on what to order?

I'll follow the trend and say either Zeitgeist or El Rio. Huge outdoor areas with picnic tables are hard to beat.
7
Never been to El Rio but I should check it out. Any drinks you recommend?
14
1
Hate to pile on, but Zeitgeist really is the best place for an outdoor happy hour. Their Bloody Mary's are killer and they have a wide selection of great beers. Throw in the ornery bartenders and it's a great time.
20
Thank god for their new concrete bathrooms! Have you ever tried any food from Zeitgeist? If so, what would you recommend?
14
I've only had their cheeseburger and their fries, both really good. The fries especially after sharing 4 pitchers with as many friends.
18
so many thumbs up for Zeitgeist, I guess I better get my ass down there and have some drinks spilled on me.
6
This time of year, outdoor HH is certainly the way to go.
8
1
For daytime drinking, I've got to recommend Zeitgeist. They've got an outdoor patio that's great for kicking back with a brew and make a cheeseburger that's simply amazing after a long night at the office. Plus, it doesn't hurt that their beer selection is phenomenal and that their staff is among the friendliest you'll meet in the city.
11
I think it's safe to say Zeitgeist is a contender for the best daytime drinking spot! The only downside, which is all on me, is that it's a cash only place. I never seem to carry cash on me (or enough that lasts!)
8
That's a chronic problem for me as well. Seems like a fair amount of the good places that I know are cash only.
25
Hear, hear - from the creepy bunny to the smell of weed outside it's easy to fall in love with Zeitgeist on an early afternoon.
9
2
Zeitgeist will get you drunk and the drinks are never watered down or lacking in taste. Their drinks have character and the patrons are friendly.
20
1
Sure, the bartenders are less than friendly and the no-photo rule is obnoxious at best, but Zeitgeist in the Mission reigns supreme as the go-to sunny day drinking destination for plaid-clad hipsters, scene kids in chunky glasses and locals looking to unwind with pals and scarf tamales in this now-famous establishment. Concrete bathrooms recently replaced their grungy port-a-potties, leaving no excuse NOT to get down and dirty with a killer Bloody Mary, a cheap beer and Bay Area beatniks.

1
Zeitgeist, hands down. It's the best place to be on a sunny Sunday afternoon in the city. Their beer selection is amazing- you want a good local brew? they have it- and the bartenders make a better bloody mary here than at any high-end brunch spot I've ever been to.
26
And it gets bonus points for a cool name!
1
5
Zeitgeist is great! Great cheap burgers, too.
7
I've never had the burgers but I do love the grilled cheese! yummmm

Palomino - the outdoor seating across from the bay bridge has awesome views. Can you ask for more? Zeitgeist- nothing like an old, classy place for drinks with the setting like your own backyard!
10
I lie Palomino. If I'm right, they have an all-day type of Happy Hour menu.

I'm not sure if Zeitgeist is considered a "singles bar" but I know it's one of the best places in the city to meet people.
43
I agree especially on Zeitgeist when it's nice out... though sometimes it can be really hit or miss.
7
agreed. but those grilled cheese sandwiches after a couple of drinks are always worth the visit!!!
43
Or the Tamale Lady!!!!! MMMMMMMM
5
Tamale Lady!!! There's also a guy who works Valencia who sells two empanadas for $5 in the bars and they're really good. If you see him, definitely partake in that deliciousness.

There is something so appealing to day time drinking while sitting on benches. If you agree, you should check out Pinchit's deal for Oktoberfest today!

I love the outdoor bench seating. Reminds me of a few of the beer gardens I have been to in Brooklyn.
9
Yeah, the outdoor seating is grand. What's your favorite drink, Robbie and Ashley?
6
Well, depends on the day. If it's before noon, definitely can't go wrong with their Bloody Mary. Otherwise, I see no reason to order anything other than one of their 40 beers on tap. I am into the Kolsch-Style Summer Ale right now, but I always like to try something new! Suggestions for my next Zeitgeist visit?
9
Yeah, I like their beer as well. The Summer Ale is quite tasty. I always recommend Downtown Brown, Barney Flats Oatmeal Stout, and Prohibition. It depends on your tastes, though. I usually like the browns, reds, and dark beers.
