The shows here are great, but watch out for the poles especially if you're at a rougher show with circle pits, they've got coat check too if you get sweaty!
There are so many great see live music. I definitely like the smaller places better. Bottom of the Hill, The Independent and Slim's are my favorites. I have also seen some great shows at BarrelHouse, Bimbo's 365 Club and Manor West as well.
I've never been to BarrelHouse, but I've heard a lot of good things - how often do they book shows there? Seems like it's a more sporadic venue.

Go to Slim's. There are a ton of great bands that play on their stage. It's an intimate venue with pretty solid acoustics.

Yes. I totally agree. I adore Slim's. Saw X and Stiff Little Fingers there within the last year. What are some of the bands you've seen perform at Slim's?
Lol. My band... CONSCIOUS SOULS
Oh cool! Is it as fun to play Slim's as it is to watch bands there?
AWESOME!

I'm a huge Jazz fan, so Yoshi's San Francisco is at the top of my list. But The Fillmore, Rockit Room, and Slim's never disappoints!
Rose Pistola and Club Deluxe also have live jazz several nights a week, though they're more bars than proper music venues. Still, they're a lot of fun.
I haven't seen a good Jazz show in sometime, my whole life, in fact. Could you recommend a good night to go or a good performer to see?
Rose Pistola! I knew I was forgetting one. They have pretty epic shows. Alex, if you go to any of the aforementioned websites, you can check out their upcoming schedules. But I don't think you'd be disappointed with a pop-in on any night.

So many great places for live music. But my favorites for small venues are Slim's, Red Devil Lounge, Rockit Room and The Independent
I live right near Rockit Room. Every time I pass by I'm surprised by its mere existence. I mean, it seems to be a misfit on the block, surrounded by sundries markets and cafes on Clement. I've heard great things. What sort of music will I most likely find live there? And, does it cost more or less than $10 on average?
I know on Thursdays there is live reggae.
What? Live reggae? I'm so excited right now. How many days 'til thursday?
Sept 22 2011 my friends from Endoxi will be playing upstairs for the second time. $5 cover - you should check them out
At Rockit room :)
They reggae?

who have you seen perform there?

Slim's on 11th and Folsom streets. Slim's is the sister venue to The Great American Music Hall and offers (as GAMH does) the option to buy dinner along with your ticket which reserves you a table in their small balcony. A large stage and dance floor provide plenty of space for great music and dancing. Slim's is also an all ages venue so you can bring the kids to see the music that you love.
They seem to get a fair share of metal acts going through, which is what I saw the last time I went. I agree, Slim's is a great venue.
I've seen some of my favorite punk bands there over the years. Have you ever been to Bottom of the Hill? Also a great place to see music.

I like Slim's and Rickshaw Stop. The BarrelHouse is also a cool secret venue...
Where is Barrellhouse? Not a secret anymore!
Ha! Barrelhouse is a cool spot in SOMA. Guess it's not really a secret, but the events they have there are usually invite only. They get a lot of up and coming bands to play there and it kind of feels like they are playing in your living room. I actually heard that it used to be a house where a famous SF photographer lived. Rumor has it that he created the concept of the Marlboro Man...
