Urban Hikes: San Francisco's Best Trails

Love to hike? Of course, this is NorCal—weekend tromps through Marin and Sonomaʼs ridiculously amazing footpaths and deer trails are practically in our certified-organic DNA.

But whatʼs that? Not in the mood to Zipcar north over the (formerly) rusted-red hill to get your fix? Not to worry: Our own little City by the Bay is home to some of the areaʼs best hilly hikeables, and theyʼre all just a MUNI ride away.

Our municipal trails may not be the longest ever (the cityʼs only seven miles long by seven miles wide, after all), but what they lack in endurance, they make up for in view, accessibility, and fun.

Lace ʻem up, folks—weʼre going stomping in SF!

Land's End is my absolute favorite hike in The City. I love that the trail terminates at Cliff House. Quick cocktail before you turn back?

love this article...i am always looking for new trails to explore. i have to say though, land's end is definitely my favorite so far
Sounds great. Thanks for the info
Meh. Sounds all right, but it would be better if there was a sideways abandoned houseframe atop a giant earthen nipple INSIDE a Eucalyptus forest.
Actually, these descriptions make me even eager-er to come vist SF!!

I love to go hiking in up-state New York, however it's not a bad idea to do it in my own backyard! I wont have to travel across the country to go. ; )
Who wants to go urban hiking in the city when the weather gets better?
nice
This is great! Can't wait to put on my walkin' boots! (That's what they were made for after all...) Send us more articles like this!
Great suggestions! I think I have to revisit Golden Gate Park.
We're down!
..just in time...heading to San Fran in June and will definitely hit Buena Vista ;-)
I like the visual you tell about the trails. Made me watch the whole thing and put it on my never-ending 'things to do before I die' list. Thanks!
Nice pitch for the city. I like this Pinchit. Limited to SF? And just so we're clear, these "hikeables" you speak of, these are hikers I can snack on? I'd hate to drive out there under some misapprehension.
you sold me!
cool article Ryan -- I'll recommend this to my friend Eric who also lives out there.

I've been meaning to check out Sutro for ever. It looms like some mysterious primeval wood on the side of Twin Peaks.
