Staycation: Get Away Without Leaving SF

Every year millions of tourists travel from far and wide to spend their coveted vacation time in the very city we call home. When we locals have enough vacation days to shake a stick at we often depart from San Francisco to explore exotic locales elsewhere.

But consider this: why not skip the expensive plane tickets, tiresome jet lag and questionable hotel bedding and join millions of people from around the world in taking a vacation right here at home in San Francisco?

In an economy still suffering through a lingering hangover, we have heard a lot of talk about such 'staycations' as cheaper alternatives to the traditional destination vacation. More than that though, there is just so much to do in San Francisco that you almost _have _to take a staycation to make a dent in your 'must-see,' 'must-eat,' and 'must do' lists.

I suggest you approach your staycation like a culture-cramming professional. That said, as an insider you won't have to waste any time glossing over the surface of San Francisco offerings. You can skip the cheese whiz of the tourist traps and instead dig right into enjoying the rich culture and entertainment of the real San Francisco.

In the following pages you will find a treasure trove of suggested activities, helpful details and insider tips that have been specially tailored for the aspiring staycationer. At the end of a successful staycation, you should find your wallet relieved and your appreciation for the city you call home fully revived.

I still need to try the Alcatraz night tours. I hear it's a lot of fun where you get access to parts of Alcatraz that aren't open to the general public (during the day). Plus there is booze- always a plus!

I love everything about Baker Beach. I love going here in the fall when our real summer kicks in. The sand for the most part is clean and the beautiful backdrop is unbeatable.
