Top 5 Spots to Impress the Future In-Laws

When choosing a restaurant for an in-law gathering, setting and accessibility can be just as important as the cranberry reduction in the shitake mushroom glaze. And while San Francisco has hundreds of first-rate restaurants from which to choose, selecting one for a successful evening extends beyond the choice of Italian or Asian.

When it comes to accommodating a group larger than four, it helps to think of a place that enables people to sit comfortably for an extended time, hear the entire conversation as well as find something on the menu that might not be too nouvelle or radical. In other words, that quaint French brasserie with the small tables jammed together near a bar that doubles as a cougar watering hole with the rock-concert-loud background noise might not be the best place for this group. Here are five suggestions for impressing the in-laws to be.

I went to an Italian restaurant called Amarena for the first time this weekend and thought it would be a great place to impress the parents. It is a charming and classy place, yet not pretentious or stuffy. The food is outstanding and so is the service.

It strikes me how warm and welcoming it is at Amarena. Memorable for that.
