The 5 Best Places to Sample The Wurst

Think German food, beer and dirndls and you’re probably thinking Oktoberfest. Being that it’s about eight months before that season of beer and cheer, some might resign themselves to sipping on a Beck’s and gnawing on their street-cart pretzels, longing for those hedonistic weeks in late-September and early October to arrive.

However, New York City boasts a huge German and German-American population, one that won’t even consider buying one of those oversize, undercooked, over-salted behemoths sold at just about every corner. This group knows its bockwurst from its bratwurst, its bock from its pils … and knows the Polka isn’t really German.

Whether you’re an expat longing for a little taste and feel of the Homeland, or a native New Yorker who has fallen into a culinary rut, you’ll find that these five places will give you cause to raise your glass and say, “Prost!”
