Cupcakes: In or Out?

Let’s face it, New York is  in the middle of a full-fledged cupcake uprising. Wherever you look, there they are: large cupcakes, over-iced cupcakes, sugar-free cupcakes, mini-cupcakes and cupcakes in flavors that would have horrified our grandmothers. 

Cupcakes now appear at weddings, showers, birthdays, bar and bat mitzvahs and even at office parties, a sure sign they’ve conquered the mainstream. They come lined up on trays, stacked into elaborate cupcake towers, initialed, stamped and theme-decorated. This is not to say all cupcakes are fabulous – indeed, like old-fashioned cake itself, there is the good, bad and downright ugly side to this phenomenon.
