Vintage Chic: Couture for Cheap in DC

For someone coming out of a fashion forward city like New York or Paris, it might seem that DC is rather boring in its sense of style; predictable and old world, filled with suits and frumpy office workers. However, upon closer examination, DC actually maintains a very classic sense of style, due in large part to the type of business that goes on in the city.

Whether you’re working on the Hill, lobbying from K St., punching the clock at a Federal office, or working your heart out at an NGO in the area, chances are your work environment dictates “Washington Business Attire”. And it’s within that parameter that DC style mavens make their mark. They incorporate the hot new color, the daring silhouette, or the “it” shoe into their wardrobe in small, accentuating ways, which adds a touch of timelessness to shifting trends.

Some of the best places to find these homages to style are in the numerous little vintage shops and boutiques scattered throughout the city. While it is widely acknowledged that fashion comes and goes in cycles, reusing and repackaging ideas from generations gone by, it is never more evident than when you walk into a vintage store and find that perfect, conversation starting necklace; totally in keeping with today’s style and yet so unique and personal that people can’t help but notice. Plus, vintage stores have other benefits as well that make them appealing to the conscientious Washington shopper, such as their budget and environmental friendliness.

For the beginner in finding and incorporating vintage “wears” into your wardrobe, here are a few places to get your feet wet. Remember to always talk to the person at the desk – chances are that if they’re working in a vintage clothing shop, it’s because they have some interest in fashion, vintage clothes, costuming, etc. Tell them about your wardrobe, what you’re looking for, and see if they can offer advice on how to start working vintage items into your pre-existing closet.

Emily, you nailed it when you said DC can seem frumpy after NYC or Paris, it's great to know we have some options in town for fashionistas on a budget.
